Strategic communication is a personal experience of reflection, feedback, practice, and changing how you communicate while learning more about how others communicated.
I'm going to share two of my personal mantras. The value to me and how these two edicts have changed my life and my relationships, cannot be over-stated.
And, yet, I sigh... knowing that most will not see the value. I've shared these two mantras with a number of friends and the underwhelmed response always seems to translate to "Seriously? That's your personal mantra?! I don't get it. Why is that transformative?"
So, let's just get this over with, here they are:
- The meaning of my communication is the response I get.
- Be impeccable with your word.
The first (The meaning of my communication is response I get) is an Neuro-Linguistics Programming (NLP) pre-supposition. And, here's a bold statement for you: Those that think it through and adopt the principle become masterful communicators.
Why? Because it's always, 100% of the time on YOU to get your message across. It's NEVER up to the other person to interpret, because the meaning - what they perceive - is ALWAYS on you.
The second (Be impeccable with your word), I learned from The Four Agreements by Don Miquel Ruiz. This one has been a bit trickier to adopt. Never the less, I've made leaps and bounds from my former, impulsive, off-the-cuff, self-righteous self by aiming to be impeccable with my word; by intending to mean what I say and say only that which I mean.
I share this as a means of demonstrating how a person can become a more masterful communicator by simply adopting, specific communication strategies that work for you.
My motto may not be the right one for you but if you do not have your own communication commitments, then what's the likelihood of you being a masterful communicator?
